2013 The Apothecary | Maile Meloy | Puffin Paperback
Set in 1952, this atmospheric middle grade adventure follows fourteen year old Janie Scott after her family moves from Los Angeles to London. There she meets Benjamin, the son of a mysterious apothecary, and is quickly pulled into a dangerous world of secret formulas, coded clues, Russian spies, and a centuries old book known as the Pharmacopoeia. It blends history, mystery, science, alchemy, and just enough magic to make it feel like a classic adventure story with a slightly darker edge. This is also book one of The Apothecary trilogy, so it is a great entry point for someone looking for a new series.
