A genuinely old children’s book with so much character. The History of Little Goody Two Shoes follows Margery, a poor orphan girl who begins life with almost nothing, including only one shoe. After receiving a proper pair of shoes, she becomes known as “Goody Two Shoes.” From there, the story follows her as she grows up, values education, learns to read and teach others, helps people around her, and gradually improves her circumstances through kindness, hard work and learning.

The story is very much a product of its time, with a strong moral lesson centered on education, good character, generosity and perseverance. It is also one of the best known early works written specifically for children and gives a fascinating look at the kind of moral storytelling that shaped children’s literature centuries ago.

This Macmillan edition was published in 1924 and is illustrated by Alice Woodward. Bibliographic records confirm Macmillan issued this illustrated reprint in 1924.

It includes charming black and white illustrations along with a color frontispiece, and it is a wonderful example of early twentieth century children’s publishing.

Condition
Fair antique condition. This is an ex library copy with withdrawn and library stamps, circulation card, writing and markings, remnants from old labels or tape inside the covers, age toning, staining, creasing, edge wear and substantial wear to the cloth binding, especially at the corners and spine ends. Pages remain readable and the illustrations are still lovely. Please review photos carefully.

Originally written for children, though today I would consider this more of an antique children’s literature or collecting piece than an everyday modern children’s reader.
