A beautiful 1931 Dodd, Mead & Company illustrated hardcover edition of R. D. Blackmore’s classic novel Lorna Doone: A Romance of Exmoor.
Originally published in 1869, Lorna Doone is a historical romance set in 17th-century Exmoor, England, following John Ridd and his relationship with Lorna Doone against a backdrop of family conflict, violence, loyalty and the notorious Doone clan.
This 1931 edition is particularly beautiful, featuring blue cloth boards with gilt lettering and a color illustration mounted to the front cover. Inside are sixteen full-page color illustrations by Rowland Wheelwright and William Sewell. The International Classics advertising insert found inside this copy specifically describes the series as containing 16 full-page color plates. The series originally retailed for $2 per volume. The exact edition is also documented by rare-book sellers as a 1931 Dodd, Mead later printing.
Perhaps the sweetest detail is the handwritten gift inscription inside:
“To Anne Jr. from Eleanor Stull
Christmas 1932”
A wonderful piece of provenance that has remained with the book for nearly a century.
Condition: Very good vintage condition for its age. Blue cloth boards remain attractive with bright gilt lettering and a well-preserved illustrated cover plate. Expected light edge and corner wear is present. Pages show normal age toning. Interior illustrations remain beautifully colored. Vintage 1932 gift inscription is present on the front endpaper, along with a small former bookseller/address label inside the rear board and a small penciled notation. No dust jacket.
