1935 | Prose and Poetry Sixth Year | Avery & Leitzell | Vintage School Reader

$10.88 NZD (plus tax)

A wonderfully worn piece of American classroom history. Prose and Poetry Sixth Year was a sixth grade literary reader used to introduce students to classic prose, poetry, art, and well known authors including Rudyard Kipling, Sir Walter Scott, Hans Christian Andersen, Oscar Wilde, Tolstoy, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Washington Irving and more. This is the 1935 revised edition, published by The L. W. Singer Company, and it still includes its beautiful color frontispiece along with additional illustrations throughout.

This copy has clearly lived a long school life, which honestly adds to its charm. The red cloth cover and spine are heavily worn with fraying, exposed areas along the spine, rubbing, staining and softened corners. The inside covers have old school markings, handwriting and a School District, Candia, N.H. stamp. Pages show age toning and scattered spotting, but the text and illustrations remain very readable. This would be such a fun piece for a vintage education collection, homeschool shelf, classroom history display, or someone who simply loves old schoolbooks.

Age range: Originally intended for approximately ages 11–12 / sixth grade. Because this is now an antique style reader with older vocabulary and literary selections, I’d primarily market it as a collectible or supplemental literature book rather than a modern sixth grade curriculum.

Condition: Fair vintage condition. Significant exterior wear and deterioration to the cloth spine and edges, previous school ownership markings and handwriting, age toning and spotting. Please review photos carefully.
