A beautiful little piece of Christmas and literary history. The First Christmas was adapted from Lew Wallace’s Ben Hur and tells the story of the Wise Men, their journey to Jerusalem and Bethlehem, and the birth of Christ. This 1904 Harper & Brothers edition is especially charming, with decorative page elements, illustrations throughout, and mounted image plates that give it that unmistakable early 1900s gift book feel.
The title page clearly dates this copy to 1904, while the copyright page notes the work was originally published in 1902. This is therefore an early reprint rather than the 1902 first edition.
Condition: Fair antique condition. The purple cloth boards show substantial rubbing, fading, staining and edge wear. The spine is heavily worn with fraying and a small hole. The front hinge is significantly weakened with the binding exposed, though the book remains together. Interior pages show age toning, foxing and scattered staining throughout. No dust jacket.
