Robinson Crusoe by Daniel Defoe is one of the most enduring adventure novels in English literature. First published in 1719, the story follows Robinson Crusoe after he is shipwrecked and left alone on a remote island, where he must learn to survive through resourcefulness, persistence, and ingenuity. Over the course of his isolation, Crusoe builds shelter, grows food, keeps records of his experiences, wrestles with faith and solitude, and eventually encounters others who dramatically change the course of his life.

The novel helped shape the survival and castaway genre and remains an important work in the history of the English novel. Its story was partly inspired by accounts of Scottish sailor Alexander Selkirk, who survived alone for more than four years after being marooned in the Juan Fernández Islands in the early 1700s.

This vintage Washington Square Press edition was published in 1961 and includes an introduction by Douglas Knight. The publisher notes that the text was slightly abridged and styled for the modern reader, making this an interesting midcentury classroom and general reading edition of the classic.
