1954 | Black Beauty | Anna Sewell | Junior Deluxe Edition | Illustrated Vintage Hardcover
A beautiful midcentury edition of Anna Sewell’s classic Black Beauty, told from the perspective of a horse as he moves through a series of owners and experiences both kindness and cruelty. Beginning with his peaceful early life, Black Beauty’s story follows him through training, carriage work, difficult masters, friendships with other horses and eventually a return to a gentler life. More than just a horse story, it became a lasting classic for the way it encourages empathy, responsibility and humane treatment of animals.
This 1954 Junior Deluxe Edition was published by Nelson Doubleday and features illustrations by Walter Seaton, including line drawings throughout and a color frontispiece. The gray pictorial boards with rows of horses and green cloth spine give it such a great 1950s children’s library look. This edition is 224 pages.
