Ingredient note: Ingredient scanning apps may flag PEG 12 Dimethicone and Polyquaternium 11. I don’t automatically consider an ingredient unsafe simply because an app flags it. PEG ingredients are often flagged because of potential manufacturing impurities such as ethylene oxide or 1,4 dioxane, rather than because the finished PEG ingredient itself is equivalent to those contaminants. Polyquaternium 11 is a conditioning polymer commonly used in hair products and is not the same thing as free monomeric starting materials that may carry different hazard profiles.

OneSkin also states that its products undergo third party safety testing and quality testing, which is important when looking at ingredients like PEGs because manufacturing quality and impurity controls matter. I prefer evaluating the finished formulation, concentration, intended use and the brand’s testing standards rather than relying on an ingredient scanner alone.
